FAQS
Some things you may be wondering:
Somatic mentoring versus somatic therapy?
Often these two will be interlinked, however mentoring sessions can be more stand alone with a focus on moving forward, gaining clarity, navigating blocks and mindset repatterning. Therapy will likely be an ongoing slow and gentle process of untangling old systems, repairing deep wounds and rebuilding trust with the body. Both will have the focus of accessing inner intelligence and working in a integrative and holistic way towards your goals.
What are the benefits of somatic therapy?
Through this process you will build inner and outer resources to assist you with lifes eventualities, you will gain a connection to your body that offers grounding, centring and healing. You will gain emotional connection and processing skills. Overtime you can access a sense of control of your health and wellbeing. Nervous system regulation. Application of boundaries. An understanding of posture and movement for your well being.
Is somatic therapy suitable for everyone?
Yes, Somatic therapy works specifically with each individual wherever they are in their journey, it is gentle and non intrusive and works at the pace of your body and nervous system, it only in this way that healing can happen.
Who can benefit from somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy will benefit those struggling from such labels as stress, grief, anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, chronic pain, headaches, co-dependancy, chronic fatigue syndrome and ADHD
How many sessions of somatic therapy are typically required to see results?
One to three sessions will be insightful and powerful for those with an existing embodiment practise, however for lasting changes to take place there needs to be consistency and integration and this will be different depending on the individuals situation, needs and application. A lifetime of stress and hurt can not be undone in a hurry.
What can I expect during a somatic therapy session?
Expect to have a nurturing space out of the busyness of life to pause and look within. The client will have ultimate agency. The session will be tailored to their needs. We will begin by building trust with each other, creating resources to orient to and regulate the nervous system. The rest will unfold in a natural exploratory flow. There will be limited emphasis on talking and analysing. The process is exploratory can involve inner and outer awareness exercises, movement, contemplation, touch (with consent)
How does somatic therapy differ from traditional talk therapy?
Working somaticly is known as a 'bottom up' approach, meaning we start with the body, the mind has been working hard enough by this time! Whereas talk therapy is a 'top down' approach, the emphasis is on understanding, labelling and repeating stories.
The reason we work this way is to connect directly with the truth of the wound that resides in the body as felt sensation. Whilst we love the mind for its many abilities, in this practise we aim to bring in more balance between all the parts, giving each an equal voice.
The mind will never find a definitive solution, its job is to assess and look at all the angles which can often lead to being stuck in a noisy and chaotic loop.
Can somatic therapy help with specific issues such as trauma, stress, or anxiety?
Yes, if we look beyond the label of these words, we can say that they are experiences happening in the body generally involving some kind of tension or contraction often where a part is stuck in a previous time. Somatic therapy allows us to communicate directly with these experiences to gain insight and know what is needed to find real-ease and integration back into the whole
Are there any potential side effects or risks associated with somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy works at the pace of your body, so the process is about building trust and allowing it to open in its own time. In this way it is does not pose a risk. When the body opens there is an expansion of awareness, and in order to step into healing we have to be willing to leave behind the attachment to suffering and this as a process can be uncomfortable.
How do I know if somatic therapy is the right approach for me?
Perhaps you have tried talk therapy with no avail, you are sick of being under the control of band-aid prescriptions for generic labels, you are tired of being tired, feeling lost or overwhelmed and your ready for something different, that is steeped in an ancient remembering of the intelligence of the natural biosystem. Something that creates lasting changes from the inside out which ultimately will put you back in control of your health and wellbeing.
